Sulfasalazine (1000 Mg)

Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 is used in adults for the treatment and long-term management of inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. It belongs to the class of medicines known as anti-inflammatory and disease-modifying agents.

It is also prescribed for the prevention of relapses in ulcerative colitis, helping patients maintain remission between flare-ups. This medicine is not suitable for the immediate relief of acute symptoms and must be taken regularly as directed by your doctor.

Before starting Sulseas Ds Tablet 15, it is important to consult your doctor. The dosage and treatment duration will depend on your condition, age, weight, liver and kidney function, and treatment response. Any unusual or severe side effects should be promptly reported.

Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 is used for:

Treatment of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis.
Adjunctive therapy in severe ulcerative colitis.
Maintenance of remission in ulcerative colitis.
Management of Crohn’s disease.
Relief of symptoms in rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
Treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (in selected cases).

Swallow the tablets whole with water, preferably after meals to reduce stomach irritation.
Do not crush or chew the tablets.
Drink sufficient fluids throughout the day while taking this medicine.
Follow your doctor’s prescription carefully and do not alter the dose on your own.

Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 is for oral use only.

Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 may cause the following common side effects:

Headache
Indigestion
Nausea and vomiting
Changes in taste
Abdominal discomfort
Skin rash

Managing the Side Effects:

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless, which resolve on discontinuing the use of Sulseas Ds Tablet 15. However, if you experience any serious side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

Headache: Rest in a quiet environment and stay well hydrated.
Nausea/indigestion: Take the medicine after meals and avoid spicy, fatty foods.

Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 contains the following active component:

Sulfasalazine (1000 mg): It reduces inflammation by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, chemicals responsible for pain and swelling. Its breakdown products, sulphapyridine and 5-aminosalicylic acid, provide both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects in the intestines and joints.

Pregnancy

Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 should only be used during pregnancy if clearly advised by your doctor. High doses may reduce folate absorption, which is important for foetal development. Supplementation may be required.

Breastfeeding

Sulfasalazine passes into breast milk. Use during breastfeeding is not generally recommended, as it may cause diarrhoea or blood-related issues in the infant. Consult your doctor before use.

Alcohol

Alcohol can irritate the stomach and worsen gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea or indigestion caused by Sulseas Ds Tablet 15. Limiting or avoiding alcohol is advisable during treatment.

Liver

Patients with liver disease must exercise caution, as Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 can increase liver enzyme levels. Regular monitoring of liver function tests is necessary.

Kidney

As Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 may affect kidney function and increase the risk of kidney stones, it should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Adequate hydration is strongly advised.

Using Machines & Driving

Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 generally does not impair alertness. However, if you feel dizzy or unwell, avoid driving, cycling, or operating heavy machinery.

Allergy

Do not take Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 if you are allergic to sulfasalazine, sulphonamides, salicylates, or any component of the tablet. Severe allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or breathing difficulty require immediate medical attention.

Children

Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 can be use in children above 6 years of age when prescribed.

Older Patients

Older patients may be more prone to blood disorders, kidney impairment, or liver issues while on Sulseas Ds Tablet 15. Closer monitoring is required in this age group.

Drug-Drug Interactions

Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 interacts with the following medicines:

Blood thinners (warfarin): The concomitant use may increase the risk of bleeding.
Digoxin (heart medicine): The concomitant use may reduce absorption and effectiveness.
Iron and folic acid supplements: The concomitant use may reduce absorption; supplementation may be required.
Antidiabetic medicines (glimepiride, glyburide, glipizide): The concomitant use may enhance hypoglycaemic effect.
Methotrexate (arthritis/cancer treatment): The concomitant use may increase risk of toxicity.
Azathioprine and mercaptopurine (immune-suppressing agents): The concomitant use may increase risk of bone marrow suppression.
Isoniazid (anti-tuberculosis medicine): The concomitant use may increase risk of liver damage.
Methenamine (antibiotic): The concomitant use may reduce effectiveness of this medicine.

Drug-Disease Interactions

Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 should be used with caution in patients with:

Intestinal or urinary obstruction: Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 may worsen blockages, leading to increased abdominal pain, swelling, or difficulty in urination.
Porphyria: Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 can trigger or aggravate an acute porphyria attack due to its sulphonamide component.
Blood disorders: Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 may reduce blood cell counts, increasing the risk of anaemia, infections, or unusual bleeding.

Daily Dose

The recommended dose of Sulseas Ds Tablet 15 varies depending on the condition being treated and your individual response. Your doctor will decide the appropriate dosage for you.

Over Dose

An overdose may cause headache, dizziness, stomach upset, nausea, or vomiting. In severe cases, yellowing of the skin, blood disorders, or kidney problems may occur. If overdose is suspected, seek medical attention immediately.

Missed Dose

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to make up for the forgotten one.
