Medler Syrup is used to relieve the symptoms of the common cold and hay fever in children. It is a combination medicine containing chlorpheniramine maleate, an antihistamine, paracetamol, a pain and fever reliever, and phenylephrine hydrochloride, a decongestant, and belongs to a class of medicines called antihistamine, decongestant and pain reliever combinations.
This medicine works by easing a runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes through chlorpheniramine, reducing fever and body aches through paracetamol, and helping to clear a blocked nose through phenylephrine. Give the exact dose prescribed by your child's doctor, using the measuring device provided, and shake the bottle well before use if the label advises. Do not give it for longer than the doctor advises.
Encouraging your child to drink plenty of fluids and to rest can help alongside this treatment. Keep your child away from known triggers such as dust, smoke and pollen, and keep the air in the room moist if their nose is blocked.
Before giving this medicine, tell your child's doctor if your child has heart problems, high blood pressure, asthma, thyroid problems, liver or kidney problems, or is taking other medicines, including any other medicine that contains paracetamol. It should not be given to children under 4 years of age unless their doctor advises it, and no other cold or cough product should be given at the same time unless the doctor says so. It can cause drowsiness or sometimes restlessness, so seek urgent medical help if your child has difficulty breathing, a fast or irregular heartbeat, a severe rash, or if the fever lasts more than 3 days.
