CompositionDapsone 100 Tablet is used to treat leprosy, as part of a combination of medicines, and some skin conditions such as dermatitis herpetiformis (an itchy, blistering rash linked to coeliac disease). It is a single-ingredient medicine containing dapsone, which belongs to a class of medicines called sulfones.
This medicine is also used, when prescribed, to help prevent certain infections, such as Pneumocystis pneumonia, in people with a weakened immune system. It works against the bacteria that cause leprosy and also reduces some types of skin inflammation. Take it exactly as prescribed, and complete the full course, which may last many months.
Eating a balanced diet and attending all follow-up visits and blood tests help treatment work safely. People with dermatitis herpetiformis should follow a strict gluten-free diet as advised.
Before starting, tell your doctor if you have G6PD deficiency, anaemia or another blood disorder, liver or kidney disease, heart or lung disease, or an allergy to sulfa medicines, and about other medicines you take. Your doctor will check your blood counts regularly. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Seek medical help straight away if you have a bluish colour of the lips or skin, breathlessness, unusual tiredness, fever, sore throat, a rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or tingling or weakness in the hands or feet. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
