Benadryl Cough Formula Syrup is used to relieve cough linked to colds and allergies, including a chesty cough with mucus, along with a runny nose, sneezing and throat irritation. It is a combination medicine containing diphenhydramine, which belongs to a class of medicines called sedating antihistamines, and ammonium chloride and sodium citrate , which belong to a class called expectorants.
This medicine works by blocking histamine, which reduces sneezing, a runny nose and the urge to cough, while ammonium chloride and sodium citrate help loosen mucus so it is easier to cough up. Take it as directed by your doctor or the label, using the measuring cup provided, and do not take more than the recommended dose.
It commonly causes drowsiness, so do not drive or use machines if affected, and avoid alcohol and other sedating medicines. Do not take it with other cough, cold or allergy medicines that contain an antihistamine. Following an Indian Health Ministry advisory, cough and cold medicines should not be given to children under two and are generally not recommended under five.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or difficulty passing urine, asthma, heart disease, epilepsy, liver or kidney problems, or take medicines for depression, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if the cough lasts more than a week, or comes with a high fever, breathlessness or blood in the phlegm.
