Sulfazent Ds Tablet 10

Sulfazent-DS Tablet is used to manage long-term inflammatory conditions affecting the joints and bowel. Uses of Sulfazent-DS Tablet are:

• Rheumatoid arthritis: This medicine helps manage active rheumatoid arthritis in adults who have not responded adequately to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines.
• Ulcerative colitis: It is used to manage mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis and as adjunctive therapy in severe cases. It is also used to prolong remission between acute attacks.
• Polyarticular-course juvenile idiopathic arthritis: It is used to manage this form of childhood arthritis in children aged 6 years and above who have not responded adequately to other anti-inflammatory medicines.

Follow these instructions whilst taking Sulfazent-DS Tablet:

• Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.
• Take this medicine preferably after food to reduce stomach upset.
• Do not crush, break or chew the tablet, as it has a special coating designed to protect your stomach.
• Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day while on this medicine.

Sulfazent-DS Tablet is taken orally.

Sulfazent-DS Tablet contains sulfasalazine (1000 mg), which works on the body as follows:

• Prodrug activation: Sulfasalazine is largely inactive until it reaches the large intestine, where bacteria break it down into two active parts: sulfapyridine and 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). These active components then produce the medicine's therapeutic effects.
• Reduces bowel inflammation: The 5-ASA component acts locally on the inflamed lining of the colon, where it blocks the production of inflammatory substances called prostaglandins and leukotrienes, thereby reducing inflammation in ulcerative colitis.
• Suppresses inflammatory signals: Sulfasalazine blocks a protein called nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), which controls genes that produce inflammatory chemicals such as tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), helping to reduce joint inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis.
• Modulates immune cells: The medicine promotes programmed cell death (apoptosis) in inflammatory cells called macrophages and suppresses the activity of B-lymphocytes, immune cells that contribute to inflammation and joint damage.

• Store Sulfazent-DS Tablet according to the storage instructions on the product packaging.
• Keep in the original container, tightly closed, in a dry place away from excess heat, moisture and direct light.
• Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.

• Maintain adequate fluid intake: Drink sufficient water throughout the day to help reduce the risk of crystalluria (crystals forming in the urine) during treatment with Sulfazent-DS Tablet.
• Follow a balanced diet: Continue a balanced diet appropriate for your underlying condition, as advised by your doctor.
