CompositionPotrate-MB6 Orange Flavour Sugar Free Solution is used to prevent kidney stones, particularly calcium oxalate and uric acid stones, from forming or coming back. It is a combination medicine containing potassium citrate, magnesium citrate and pyridoxine (vitamin B6), and belongs to a group of medicines called urinary alkalinisers.
This medicine is also used to manage renal tubular acidosis (a kidney condition in which the body cannot remove acid properly) and low levels of citrate in the urine, both of which raise the risk of stones. It makes the urine less acidic, which can help dissolve small uric acid stones and stop crystals from forming. Mix each dose with water and take it after meals, as prescribed by your doctor.
Drinking enough water to produce plenty of pale urine each day is one of the most important ways to prevent stones. Limiting salt, processed food and very high intake of meat, and following any dietary advice from your doctor, can also help.
Before starting this medicine, tell your doctor if you have kidney failure, high potassium levels, heart disease, a stomach ulcer or slow stomach emptying, and about all other medicines you take, especially medicines for blood pressure or water tablets. Your doctor may check your blood potassium and kidney function during treatment. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if you notice muscle weakness, an irregular heartbeat, black stools or severe stomach pain. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
