Quinin Tablet is used to treat uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, usually together with another antibiotic such as doxycycline or clindamycin. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing quinine sulphate 300mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called antimalarials.
This medicine kills the malaria parasite in the blood. It is usually used when first-choice malaria treatments are not suitable, and is also used with clindamycin to treat babesiosis, a rare tick-borne infection. Take it with or after food, exactly as prescribed, and complete the full course, usually 7 days. It is not used to prevent malaria or to treat leg cramps.
Drinking plenty of fluids, resting and using mosquito nets and repellents to prevent further bites support recovery.
This medicine commonly causes ringing in the ears, headache, nausea and blurred vision, which usually settle after treatment. It can cause low blood sugar, especially in pregnancy, so eat regularly and report shaking, sweating or confusion. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have heart rhythm problems, G6PD deficiency, myasthenia gravis, eye nerve disease, diabetes or tinnitus, and about other medicines you take, especially heart rhythm medicines and blood thinners. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, as it may still be used under supervision. Seek medical help straight away for a fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, dark or red urine, unusual bruising, sudden loss of vision or hearing, or a severe rash. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
