It belongs to a group of medicines called anticonvulsants (anti-epileptics). It helps steady the electrical activity in the brain, which reduces seizures. It is given as injection by a doctor or nurse under medical supervision, often as a short-term measure until tablets or liquid can be used.
Some general measures can help alongside this medicine. These include getting regular sleep, limiting alcohol, and keeping a record of any seizures to share with your doctor.
Before this medicine is given, tell your doctor about any kidney problems, mood or mental health conditions, or other medicines you take. Tell your doctor promptly about low mood, unusual irritability, or changes in behaviour, as these can occur with this type of medicine. It should not be stopped suddenly. Your care team will plan when to switch you back to tablets or liquid once you can take medicines by mouth, and they will review your treatment regularly.
