CompositionChloramphenicol 1% Eye Ointment is used to treat bacterial infections of the surface of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing chloramphenicol, which belongs to a class of medicines called antibiotics.
This medicine is also used to treat bacterial infection of the eyelid edges (blepharitis) and other surface eye infections caused by bacteria. It does not work against viral or fungal eye infections. Wash your hands, gently pull down the lower eyelid and apply a small strip of ointment inside it, as directed by your doctor. It is often used at night, as it can blur vision for a while.
Avoid rubbing your eyes, wash your hands often, and do not share towels, pillows or eye make-up while you have an infection. Do not wear contact lenses until the infection has cleared.
Before using this medicine, tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has had a blood disorder or problems with the bone marrow, and about other eye medicines you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if your eye becomes more painful or red, your vision changes, the infection does not improve within 2 days, or you notice unusual bruising, bleeding or a sore throat. Do not stop using this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
