This medicine works by slowing and steadying the heart rate and easing the heart's workload, which helps lower blood pressure, reduces the risk of serious heart problems over time and improves symptoms in angina and heart failure. Take it at the same time each day, with or without food, exactly as your doctor prescribes, and continue even if you feel well.
Blood pressure and heart failure often need ongoing treatment, so keep taking this medicine and attend your regular check-ups. Avoid alcohol, as it can lower your blood pressure further.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have asthma, a very slow heart rate, poor circulation in the limbs, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, liver or kidney problems, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. It can hide the warning signs of low blood sugar, so monitor your blood sugar if you have diabetes. Do not change your dose without medical advice, as stopping suddenly can worsen angina or trigger heart problems.
