Becript Tablet is used to treat high levels of the hormone prolactin (hyperprolactinaemia) and the problems it causes, such as missed periods, infertility and unwanted breast milk production. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing bromocriptine 2.5mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called dopamine agonists.
This medicine acts like dopamine in the brain, which lowers prolactin and growth hormone release. It is also used to treat prolactin-producing pituitary tumours, acromegaly, and, under specialist care, Parkinson's disease. Take it with food, usually starting at a low dose at bedtime and increasing slowly, as prescribed, to reduce nausea and dizziness.
Getting up slowly from sitting or lying down reduces dizziness. Avoid alcohol, which can increase side effects.
This medicine can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, especially at first, and sudden sleepiness, so do not drive if affected. It is not used to stop breast milk production after childbirth. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, heart or blood vessel disease, heart valve problems, a history of mental illness, or liver or kidney disease, and about other medicines you take, especially certain antibiotics, antipsychotics and migraine medicines. If you become pregnant, tell your doctor straight away. Seek medical help for chest pain, severe headache, vision changes, breathlessness, persistent cough, hallucinations, or urges such as gambling or shopping that are hard to control. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
