Zymar 0.3% Eye Ointment is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, an infection of the thin, clear layer covering the white of the eye. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing gatifloxacin, which belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones.
This medicine clears the bacteria causing the infection and eases redness, swelling and sticky discharge. It does not work against viral or fungal eye infections. Wash your hands, gently pull down the lower eyelid and apply a small strip of ointment inside it, as directed by your doctor, without letting the tube tip touch your eye. It may blur your vision briefly, so it is often used at bedtime.
Avoid rubbing your eyes, wash your hands often, and do not share towels, pillows or eye make-up while you have an infection. Do not wear contact lenses until the infection has cleared.
Before using this medicine, tell your doctor if you are allergic to gatifloxacin or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics, and about other eye medicines you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Wait until your vision clears before driving. Contact your doctor if the eye becomes more painful, swollen or red, your vision changes, or there is no improvement within a few days. Do not stop using this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
