Acivir Eye Ointment is used to treat viral infections of the eye, specifically those caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). It is a vital treatment for keratitis (infection of the cornea), which if left untreated, can lead to permanent scarring and vision loss. The ointment helps clear the viral "dendrites" on the eye's surface, reducing pain, light sensitivity, and excessive tearing.
This ointment contains Acyclovir, an antiviral agent. It works by specifically targeting viral cells and blocking their DNA polymerase, an enzyme the virus needs to copy itself. By stopping the virus from replicating, the medication allows the eye's delicate tissues to heal. Its thick ointment base ensures that the active medicine stays in contact with the eye surface for a longer period.
Apply a small ribbon (about 1cm) of the ointment inside the lower eyelid five times a day (approximately every 4 hours) while awake, as prescribed by your ophthalmologist. It may cause temporary blurred vision, so avoid driving immediately after application. Do not wear contact lenses while using this medication. Continue use for at least 3 days after the eye appears to be healed to ensure the virus is fully suppressed.
