CompositionGardasil 9 Vaccine is used to protect females and males against diseases caused by nine types of human papillomavirus (HPV), including cervical, vaginal, vulvar and anal cancers, certain head and neck cancers, and genital warts. It works best when given before first exposure to HPV.
It contains material from nine HPV types (6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58). It works by prompting the immune system to build protection against these types. It does not treat an existing HPV infection.
It is given as an injection into a muscle by a healthcare professional, as a 2- or 3-dose course depending on age. Remain seated for 15 minutes afterwards, as brief fainting can occur.
Tell the healthcare team about any severe allergy to yeast or to the vaccine, or any current moderate or severe illness. It is not suitable during pregnancy. Routine cervical screening should continue.
