This medicine works by prompting the pancreas to release more insulin and by helping the body use insulin better and make less sugar in the liver, which keeps blood sugar steadier through the day. The metformin is in a sustained-release form, so swallow the tablet whole without crushing or chewing, just before or with a main meal, and take it regularly as prescribed.
A balanced diet with regular meals, regular physical activity and routine blood sugar monitoring are important alongside this medicine. Do not skip meals, and carry a sugary snack in case your blood sugar drops suddenly.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, a history of low blood sugar, or are due for a scan with contrast dye or surgery, and limit alcohol. Low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) can occur, and extreme tiredness with fast breathing or stomach pain can rarely signal lactic acidosis, so seek urgent medical help.
