Ozonated Water Benefits and Application

People don’t often talk about ozonated water. It may make us think of the ozone layer but it is far from it, also there are not many of us who know about an ozone water therapy or have asked the dentist what water they employ for mouth rinses.

Ozonated water is believed to be one of the purest forms of water, free from all contamination. Although there are multiple ways to purify water, such as chlorination, UV light, and ozonation offer a lot of distinct advantages when compared with other filtration techniques.

Ozone water purification is an eco-friendly method of filtration that works efficiently and leaves no trail behind. Apart from usage for purposes where disinfected water is needed, it also provides health benefits, such as boosting the immune system, reducing inflammation, increasing the O2 levels in the body, and various more.

What is Ozonation and How Does It Happen Naturally?

In order to purify water with ozone, ozone is infused into the water. Ozone is a light blue and highly combative gas, which occurs naturally in the stratosphere and troposphere, and can also be synthetically produced in the laboratory. Ozone is composed of three oxygen atoms (chemical formula of O3).

With the help of UV radiation from the Sun, the ozonation process can take place naturally. Viz, the UV rays break oxygen molecules present in the water down to free oxygen atoms. These free oxygen atoms are highly reactive, they react with the other oxygen molecules producing ozone. The ozone then onslaughts and neutralizes the impurities and pollutants, similar to how free chlorine radicals work in a water pool. Once the O3 water is pure and free of impurities, the ozone converts back to an oxygen molecule.

With the application of electrical generators or special ultraviolet lamps, it can also be produced artificially. In the ozone water purification process, the prime step is ozone production through high voltage across the oxygen gas source.

This forces an oxygen molecule to split into two distinct oxygen atoms, which then react with the whole oxygen molecule to give ozone. In labs, UV lamps are used for ozonation, the process is similar to natural ozone production. Ozone is highly reactive, which also acts as a disinfectant. However, it has a short half-life, so it is difficult to store as well. Hence, ozone is usually always generated on-site for instantaneous use.

Ozonation water benefits

In comparison with other water purification techniques, ozonated water offers many distinct advantages. Firstly, zero chemicals are appended in the water during ozonation, which makes the process relatively safer and environmentally friendlier. It doesn’t taste different from normal water, on the contrary, it improves the taste and odour. Ozone is comparatively a more potent disinfectant than chlorine, and it works rapidly.

Few drawbacks of Ozonated Water

Ozonation however doesn’t have any residual disinfection capacity after the introductory purification, as the ozone converts back to oxygen. This allows the chance for the regrowth of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It is also difficult to ozonate the water to a defined value, and hence ozonated water therapy hasn’t been widely used in medicine.

Application of Ozonated Water

1. Water Disinfection

Ozone is considered a broad-spectrum disinfectant that inactivates and neutralizes various microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, bacterial and fungal spores, and viruses. So, it is used for disinfection purposes as well. Ozonated water(O3 water) is used to wash fruits, vegetables, and fish to do away with pesticides often sprayed on them.

Washing fresh fruit and vegetables with ozonated water instead of regular water helps them to stay fresh and non-perishable for a longer period. It is also used to eliminate irksome odours from clothing. It could be used to disinfect certain domestic items, such as tabletops, sinks, toothbrushes, kitchen tops, cutleries, chopping boards, and more.

2. Dental Use

The employment of ozonated water in dentistry dates back to the 1930s. O3 water was used to disinfect the oral cavity and help in wound healing. At present, it is still used by a considerable number of dentists in dental treatments to reduce inflammation and disinfect wounds.

Additionally, it is also beneficial to rinse the mouth with ozonated water and gargle with it after undergoing some sort of dental treatment, to limit the potential development of bacterial infections and throat diseases. It has also been applied to mitigate toothache and for teeth whitening.

Furthermore, ozonated water therapy is profoundly used in the treatment of dental caries, restorative dentistry, endodontics, and hypersensitive teeth, and in various other dentistry applications.

3. Ozone therapy

Another benefit is the ozone water therapy used to strengthen a person’s immune system and overall health. Ozonated water therapy can be done parallelly with other treatments, it increases the potency and effect of complementary supplements.

Ozonated water therapy works for everyone, irrespective of one’s state of health. It is a safe and handy treatment, which has healing and detoxifying properties. It is highly effective for people with digestive problems, acne, and inflammatory diseases.

The Health Benefits of Ozonated Water

Compared with highly combative ozone gas, ozonated water is a lot simpler to handle and store as well.

It eliminates various bacteria, fungi, algae, and parasites which is the main principle behind ozonated water therapy. Consuming it allows ozone to have direct contact with the microflora of one’s gut, killing the hazardous yeast and bacteria that are responsible for bloating, digestive problems, obesity, and even acne. And hence drinking ozone water for weight loss is a preferable choice.

Drinking ozonated water also reduces the inflammation in the body, benefitting people who suffer from inflammatory bowel syndrome, migraines, digestive problems, rheumatoid arthritis, and other inflammation-causing ailments.

Ozonated water boosts your immune system and makes your body more efficient to fight infections. Ozone purifies the blood and enriches it with oxygen, thereby providing enough oxygen to the brain, improving one’s focus, concentration, and cognitive abilities. Having ozonated water detoxifies the body too, making you feel lighter and extra energetic.

Besides consuming ozonated water, it can also be applied topically, viz, to wash hands and face to get ourselves a better complexion and youthful glow. Bathing with ozonated water is believed to eradicate skin ailments and can help cure muscle stiffness and pain.

Studies also point to the anti-cancer properties of ozonated water. Drinking ozonated water can help your body fight cancer. It’s a safe and easy way to treat cancer, and it can be a great alternative treatment for cancer patients.
