Uses of Mefenamic Acid + Paracetamol

Mefenamic Acid + Paracetamol is a combination pain reliever used to manage moderate pain, fever, and inflammation.

This combination is commonly used for:

  • Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhoea): Provides effective relief from cramping and lower abdominal pain associated with menstruation by reducing the production of prostaglandins involved in pain and uterine contractions.
  • Headache and migraine: Relieves mild-to-moderate headache pain, including tension headaches and menstrual migraines.
  • Fever: Reduces elevated body temperature associated with infections, inflammatory conditions, or post-vaccination reactions.
  • Muscle and joint pain: Eases pain and stiffness caused by musculoskeletal conditions, sports injuries, or inflammatory joint disorders.
  • Post-operative and dental pain: Provides short-term relief from mild-to-moderate pain following surgical or dental procedures.
  • Toothache: Reduces localised pain and inflammation associated with dental conditions.

Side effects of Mefenamic Acid + Paracetamol

The side effects of Mefenamic Acid + Paracetamol are:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

  • Indigestion

How Mefenamic Acid + Paracetamol works

  • Mefenamic Acid + Paracetamol works through two complementary pain-relieving mechanisms that together provide more comprehensive relief than either medicine alone.
  • Mefenamic Acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), which the body uses to produce prostaglandins chemicals responsible for causing pain, inflammation, and fever at the site of injury or illness. By reducing prostaglandin production, Mefenamic Acid lowers inflammation, eases pain, and helps reduce fever. It is particularly effective for pain associated with prostaglandin-driven processes, such as menstrual pain.
  • Paracetamol works primarily in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It reduces pain perception by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the brain . It also lowers body temperature by acting on the hypothalamus, the brain's temperature-regulating centre, helping to reduce fever.
  • Together, the peripheral anti-inflammatory action of Mefenamic Acid and the central pain-modulating effect of Paracetamol provide enhanced relief for a wider range of pain and fever conditions.
