Age and Dose Restrictions

• Pioglitazone is not recommended for use in children below 18 years of age.

Contraindications

• Pioglitazone is contraindicated in patients with a history of heart failure, bladder cancer, severe liver disease, or an allergy to the medication. It should not be used in individuals with diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients with a history of osteoporosis should also use it cautiously due to an increased risk of fractures.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Avoid using Pioglitazone with insulin, corticosteroids (such as prednisolone), diuretics (such as furosemide), oral contraceptives (such as norethindrone), and certain antifungal medications (such as ketoconazole). These medications may affect the effectiveness and safety of Pioglitazone. Always inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking.

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Pioglitazone may lead to severe hypoglycemia or fluid retention. In case of an overdose, seek medical attention immediately. 
• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

Management of Side Effects

• To manage fluid retention, reduce salt intake and monitor for signs of swelling in the legs and feet. If you experience low blood sugar, consume a source of quick sugar like fruit juice or candy. For muscle pain or weakness, mild stretching exercises and hydration may help. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor for necessary adjustments.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Pioglitazone may cause dizziness or blurred vision, which can affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you experience these symptoms, avoid activities that require mental alertness until you know how the medication affects you.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Pioglitazone is not recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to potential risks to the fetus or newborn. If you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using this medication.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Pioglitazone should be used with caution in patients with liver disease, heart disease, macular edema, or a history of bladder cancer. Regular monitoring of liver function tests, heart function, and blood sugar levels is essential while taking this medication.

• Maintain a balanced diet with a low glycemic index to improve blood sugar control. Include fiber-rich foods like whole grains, vegetables, and legumes.
