Antidiabetic

Uses of Empagliflozin

  • Increased urination
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Dehydration

How Empagliflozin works

  • Empagliflozin is an oral antihyperglycemic agent.
It belongs to the SGLT2 (sodium-glucose co-transporter-2) inhibitor class.
  • It works by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose, leading to increased glucose excretion through urine.
  • This helps lower blood sugar levels and can contribute to weight loss and blood pressure reduction.

Expert Advice

Dosage Forms Available

  • Empagliflozin is available as oral tablets.

Age and Dose Restrictions

  • Empagliflozin is not recommended for children below 18 years.

Contraindications

  • This medication is contraindicated in patients with severe kidney disease, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), or allergy to empagliflozin. It should also be avoided in patients with severe dehydration or low blood pressure.

Other Medications to Avoid

  • Avoid taking empagliflozin with diuretics (furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), insulin, sulfonylureas (glipizide, glyburide), corticosteroids (prednisolone), and certain blood pressure medications (ACE inhibitors, ARBs), as they may increase the risk of dehydration, kidney problems, or severe hypoglycemia. Always inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking.

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • An overdose of empagliflozin may cause severe dehydration, hypotension (low blood pressure), and ketoacidosis. Seek immediate medical attention in case of an overdose.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

Management of Side Effects

  • To manage urinary tract infections, maintain good hygiene and drink plenty of fluids. If dehydration occurs due to increased urination, drink water or electrolyte-rich fluids to stay hydrated. If dizziness or lightheadedness persists, avoid sudden movements and rise slowly from a sitting or lying position. Seek medical help if side effects worsen or persist.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

  • Empagliflozin may cause dizziness or weakness, especially if dehydration occurs. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you understand how this medication affects you.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

  • This medication is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to potential risks to the baby. Consult your doctor for alternative diabetes management options.

Caution in Other Conditions

  • Use this medication with caution in individuals with kidney or liver disease, hypotension (low blood pressure), frequent urinary tract infections, or a history of ketoacidosis. Patients should also monitor for genital yeast infections, which can be a common side effect.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

  • Follow a low-glycemic index diet, including green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
  • Engage in regular exercise to improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control.
