Bilastine + Montelukast

Uses of Bilastine + Montelukast

Bilastine + Montelukast is a combination of an antihistamine and a leukotriene receptor antagonist used for allergic rhinitis when both components are considered appropriate.
This combination is commonly used for:
• Seasonal allergic rhinitis: Relieves sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and itchy, watery eyes caused by seasonal allergens.
• Perennial allergic rhinitis: Manages year-round allergy symptoms caused by dust mites, pet dander, mould, or other indoor allergens.
• Allergic rhinitis with coexisting asthma: May be prescribed as an add-on to the person's regular asthma treatment; it does not replace a reliever or controller inhaler.
• Allergic rhinitis not adequately controlled by an antihistamine alone: May be considered when montelukast is appropriate after assessment of benefits and risks.

Side effects of Bilastine + Montelukast

  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach Pain

How Bilastine + Montelukast works

  • Bilastine + Montelukast targets two pathways involved in allergic rhinitis.
  • Bilastine blocks histamine H1 receptors, reducing symptoms such as sneezing, nasal itching, a runny nose, and watery eyes.
  • Montelukast blocks leukotriene receptors, reducing leukotriene-driven inflammation and mucus production in the nose and airways.
  • Together, the medicines may relieve allergic rhinitis symptoms when both are needed. The combination is not a substitute for standard inhaled treatment of asthma, and montelukast should be used only after its benefits and risks have been considered.
