Bilastine is a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions affecting the nose, eyes, and skin.
Bilastine is commonly used for:
• Allergic rhinitis: Relieves sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and nasal itching caused by seasonal or year-round allergies.
• Allergic conjunctivitis: Eases itching, redness, and watering of the eyes caused by allergens.
• Chronic urticaria (hives): Reduces itching, swelling, and skin rashes associated with long-term hives.
• Seasonal allergies: Manages symptoms triggered by pollen and other outdoor allergens.
• Perennial allergies: Controls year-round symptoms caused by indoor allergens such as dust mites and pet dander.
Bilastine works by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical the body releases during an allergic reaction.
It selectively binds to histamine H1 receptors, preventing histamine from attaching to them. Since histamine cannot activate these receptors, the symptoms it would normally trigger, such as itching, sneezing, and a runny nose, are reduced.
Bilastine has low penetration into the brain, which means it is less likely to cause the drowsiness commonly associated with older antihistamines.
