Metformin + Sitagliptin

Antidiabetic

Uses of Metformin + Sitagliptin

Metformin + Sitagliptin is a combination medicine used to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

This combination is commonly used for:

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus: Helps improve blood sugar control alongside diet and exercise when one medicine alone does not provide adequate control.

Side effects of Metformin + Sitagliptin

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Flatulence
  • Constipation
  • Stomach ache
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood sugar

How Metformin + Sitagliptin works

  • This combination works by targeting blood sugar through two complementary actions.
  • Metformin reduces the amount of glucose produced by the liver and improves the body's sensitivity to insulin, helping muscles absorb and use glucose more effectively.
  • Sitagliptin belongs to a class of medicines called DPP-4 inhibitors. It increases the levels of certain gut hormones that stimulate insulin release after meals and reduce the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar.
  • Together, these actions help lower blood glucose levels and improve overall control of type 2 diabetes.

Age and Dose Restrictions

  • This combination is meant for use in adults.

  • Metformin + Sitagliptin should not be used in patients with a serious allergy to Metformin or Sitagliptin, severe renal impairment, or metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis.

Other Medications To Avoid With This Medicine

  • Metformin + Sitagliptin may interact with several medicines. In particular, this combination may need to be temporarily stopped when iodinated X-ray contrast agents are used, depending on kidney function and other risk factors. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors such as Topiramate may increase the risk of lactic acidosis. Consult your doctor before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • An overdose of Metformin + Sitagliptin can lead to a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis. Symptoms may include feeling unusually cold or uncomfortable, severe nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, severe weakness or tiredness, muscle cramps, or rapid breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, inform your doctor immediately and seek urgent medical attention.
  • If you forget to take a dose of this combination, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

Use In Driving And Operating Machinery

  • Metformin + Sitagliptin itself does not directly impact your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, it may lead to hypoglycemia which can cause dizziness. Taking precautions to prevent low blood sugar while driving or handling machinery is essential.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor before using Metformin + Sitagliptin. Consult your doctor before using this combination while breastfeeding as well.

Special Dietary & Lifestyle Recommendation

  • Making lifestyle changes, including dietary modifications and regular exercise, is essential when taking Metformin + Sitagliptin to control blood sugar levels properly.
  • Monitor your blood sugar and HbA1c levels regularly. The frequency of testing will be determined by your doctor based on your health condition and blood sugar control.
  • If hypoglycemia occurs, it's essential to have a quick source of sugar readily available. Carry sugar candies, glucose tablets, or sugary foods and drinks without fat or protein, such as fruit juice, to promptly address low blood sugar episodes.
