Dosage Forms Available

• Fosfomycin is available for oral use as granules for oral solution and as sachets. Injectable formulations may also be available in hospital settings.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Fosfomycin can be used in both adults and children. Dose adjustment may be required based on age, body weight, and type of infection.

Contraindications

• Fosfomycin is contraindicated in patients with known allergy to fosfomycin or any of its ingredients. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe kidney impairment undergoing haemodialysis.

Other Medications to Avoid With This Medicine

• Fosfomycin may interact with prokinetic medicines (such as metoclopramide), anticoagulants (such as warfarin), and other antibacterial medicines.
• Before starting any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, consult your doctor, as some medicines may affect the absorption or effectiveness of Fosfomycin.

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Fosfomycin may cause nausea, dizziness, unusual taste changes, or diarrhoea. If you experience these symptoms, inform your doctor and follow their advice.
• If you forget to take this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Avoid taking a double dose.

Management of Side Effects

• Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve after completing treatment with this medicine. However, if you experience severe diarrhoea, allergic reactions, or worsening of symptoms, consult your doctor immediately.
• Drink plenty of fluids to help reduce urinary discomfort and maintain hydration during treatment.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Fosfomycin may cause dizziness in some individuals. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you feel dizzy or unwell after taking this medicine.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Fosfomycin should be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding only if recommended by your doctor. 

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with kidney disease, recurrent or complicated urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal disorders, or elderly patients should exercise caution while taking this medicine.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help flush bacteria from the urinary tract and reduce burning during urination.
• Avoid holding urine for long periods, as this may increase the risk of worsening urinary tract infections.
• Maintain proper intimate hygiene and wear loose cotton clothing to help reduce moisture and bacterial growth.
• Limit alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and spicy foods if they worsen bladder irritation or urinary discomfort.
