Uses of Fosfomycin

  • Fosfomycin is used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). It belongs to the group of antibacterial medicines.
  • It is also indicated for uncomplicated acute bacterial cystitis and the prevention of urinary tract infections associated with certain urological procedures.

Contraindications

  • Fosfomycin is contraindicated in patients with known allergy to fosfomycin or any of its ingredients. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe kidney impairment undergoing haemodialysis.

  • Fosfomycin may interact with prokinetic medicines (such as metoclopramide), anticoagulants (such as warfarin), and other antibacterial medicines.

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help flush bacteria from the urinary tract and reduce burning during urination.
  • Avoid holding urine for long periods, as this may increase the risk of worsening urinary tract infections.
  • Maintain proper intimate hygiene and wear loose cotton clothing to help reduce moisture and bacterial growth.
  • Limit alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and spicy foods if they worsen bladder irritation or urinary discomfort.
