Dosage Forms Available

• Fenofibrate can be taken orally (tablets, capsules, and delayed-release capsules).

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Fenofibrate is meant for adults above the age of 18 years

Contraindications

• Do not use this medicine if you have an allergy to Fenofibrate or any of its components, serious kidney problems, liver problems, including a condition called primary biliary cirrhosis, ongoing unexplained abnormal liver function, or existing gallbladder disease.

Other Medications to Avoid

• This medication can interact with coumarin anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, dicumarol), immunosuppressants (e.g., cyclosporine, tacrolimus), bile acid-binding resins (e.g., colestipol, cholestyramine), and statins (e.g., atorvastatin, simvastatin).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Taking more than the prescribed dose of Fenofibrate may cause symptoms such as muscle pain or tenderness, extreme tiredness, fever, and dark-coloured urine which may indicate muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis). If you experience these symptoms, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor or seek emergency medical attention immediately.

• If you miss a dose of Fenofibrate, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one. Consistent use alongside diet and lifestyle changes is important for effective lipid management

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve after discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Sipping water frequently may help in managing side effects like dry mouth or throat.

• Taking Fenofibrate with meals may help in reducing gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, abdominal pain or diarrhoea.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Fenofibrate does not usually affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you feel unwell or experience any side effects that could affect your ability to concentrate or react, avoid these activities until you feel better.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• If you are pregnant and breastfeeding, it is recommended to discuss this with your doctor before taking this medicine.

Caution in Other Conditions

• If you have mild to moderate kidney problems, your doctor may need to adjust your dose of Fenofibrate. Older adults may also need dose adjustments as they are more likely to have decreased kidney function.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• Following a diet that is low in saturated fats and cholesterol is important when taking Fenofibrate. This will help the medicine work better at lowering your cholesterol levels.
