Uses of Fenofibrate
Fenofibrate is a lipid-lowering medicine used to manage abnormal levels of fats (lipids) in the blood, particularly when diet and lifestyle changes alone are not sufficient.
Fenofibrate is commonly used for:
- High triglycerides (hypertriglyceridaemia): Significantly lowers raised triglyceride levels in the blood, which helps reduce the risk of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) caused by very high triglycerides.

How Fenofibrate works
Fenofibrate works by activating a specific protein receptor in the body called peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha), which regulates the genes involved in fat metabolism.
When PPAR-alpha is activated by Fenofibrate, it triggers several beneficial changes in the way the body handles fats:
- Increased breakdown of triglycerides: PPAR-alpha activation stimulates an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which breaks down triglyceride-rich particles (VLDL) in the blood, lowering triglyceride levels.
- Reduced liver production of VLDL: Fenofibrate reduces the liver's production of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), decreasing the release of triglycerides into the bloodstream.
- Raised HDL cholesterol: It increases the production of apolipoproteins A-I and A-II, proteins that form HDL (good) cholesterol particles, resulting in higher HDL levels.
- Reduced apolipoprotein C-III: This protein normally inhibits lipoprotein lipase. By reducing it, Fenofibrate further enhances fat breakdown.
Overall, these effects lower harmful blood fats and raise beneficial cholesterol, helping to improve lipid levels and reduce the risk of complications associated with severe lipid abnormalities.

Contraindications
Do not use this medicine if you have an allergy to Fenofibrate or any of its components, serious kidney problems, liver problems, including a condition called primary biliary cirrhosis, ongoing unexplained abnormal liver function, or existing gallbladder disease.

This medication can interact with coumarin anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, dicumarol), immunosuppressants (e.g., cyclosporine, tacrolimus), bile acid-binding resins (e.g., colestipol, cholestyramine), and statins (e.g., atorvastatin, simvastatin).
Overdose and Missed Dose
- Taking more than the prescribed dose of Fenofibrate may cause symptoms such as muscle pain or tenderness, extreme tiredness, fever, and dark-coloured urine which may indicate muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis). If you experience these symptoms, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor or seek emergency medical attention immediately.
If you miss a dose of Fenofibrate, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one. Consistent use alongside diet and lifestyle changes is important for effective lipid management

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve after discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.
