Voglibose

Antidiabetic

Uses of Voglibose

Voglibose is an anti-diabetic medicine used to control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes.
It is commonly used for:
• Type 2 diabetes mellitus: Helps manage post-meal (postprandial) blood sugar spikes as part of overall diabetes management.
• Impaired glucose tolerance: Assists in controlling elevated blood sugar levels in individuals at risk of developing diabetes.
• Blood sugar control alongside diet and exercise: Supports blood sugar management when used together with lifestyle changes and other diabetes medicines.

Side effects of Voglibose

  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Loose stools
  • Heartburn
  • Hypoglycemia

How Voglibose works

  • Voglibose works by slowing down the digestion of carbohydrates in the intestine.
  • It blocks an enzyme called alpha-glucosidase, which is responsible for breaking down complex carbohydrates into simple sugars that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
  • By slowing this breakdown process, Voglibose delays the absorption of glucose after meals, preventing sharp spikes in blood sugar levels. This helps maintain more stable blood sugar levels throughout the day.

Expert Advice

Dosage Forms Available

  • Voglibose can be taken orally (tablet).

Age And Dose Restrictions

  • It is not intended to be used by children.

Contraindications

  • It is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Voglibose. It is also contraindicated in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic pre-coma, gastrointestinal obstruction, severe infection before and after surgery, and serious trauma.

Medications To Avoid With This Drug

  • Avoid taking other anti-diabetic medications (sulfonylamide, sulfonylurea or biguanide, or with insulin), alpha blockers, salicylic acid preparations (aspirin), antidepressants (fluoxetine), and anticoagulants (warfarin). These medications may alter the safety and effectiveness of Voglibose.

Overdose And Missed Dose

  • An overdose of Voglibose may cause abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, and diarrhoea due to the excessive accumulation of undigested carbohydrates in the intestine. If you experience severe symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. Severe hypoglycaemia is not typically caused by Voglibose alone, but if you are taking other antidiabetic medicines alongside it, low blood sugar may occur. Strict adherence to the prescribed dose is essential.
  • If you miss a dose of Voglibose, take it only if you are about to eat a meal. If your meal has already been eaten, skip the missed dose and continue with your next scheduled dose at your next meal. Do not take two doses together. Voglibose is only effective when taken with food.

Management Of Side Effects

  • Take Voglibose with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects and continue taking it as prescribed. To combat hypoglycemia, eat or drink a source of sugar such as fruit juice, candy, crackers, raisins, or non-diet soda. Once your blood sugar stabilises, have a balanced snack or meal to prevent another drop. If side effects worsen or persist, consult your doctor for a possible treatment plan adjustment.

Use In Driving And Operating Machinery

  • It is unlikely to cause dizziness. However, it is recommended to avoid doing activities that require mental alertness or coordination till you know how this medication affects you.

Use In Pregnancy And Lactation

  • Caution is advised while taking Voglibose during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Caution In Other Conditions

  • Caution is advised in patients with a history of laparotomy or ileus and patients with chronic intestinal disease. Patients with severe hernia, roemheld syndrome, stenosis, and ulcer of the large intestine should also exercise caution. Patients with liver and kidney disorders should also consult a doctor before taking Voglibose.

Special Dietary And Lifestyle Recommendation

  • Incorporate foods with low glycemic index, such as green leafy vegetables, whole grains, berries, citrus fruits, chia seeds, bitter gourd and extra virgin olive oil.
  • Engage in regular physical activity, which can help improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control.
  • Watch your sodium intake and not exceed 5 gm daily to avoid heart conditions with diabetes.
  • Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly and stay connected with your doctor to adjust your treatment plan.
