How Glimepiride + Metformin + Voglibose works

  • The principal mechanism by which glimepiride lowers blood glucose levels is believed to rely on stimulating insulin release from functional pancreatic beta cells. Furthermore, the activity of sulfonylureas, including glimepiride, may involve extrapancreatic effects.
  • Metformin exerts its effects through multiple mechanisms, including the reduction of hepatic glucose production, inhibition of intestinal glucose absorption, and enhancement of insulin sensitivity through increased peripheral glucose uptake and utilisation. Significantly, compared to sulfonylureas (SUs), metformin does not induce hypoglycemia.
  • Voglibose (alpha-glucosidase inhibitor) is a synthetic compound exhibiting robust and sustained therapeutic effects against complications affecting the sensory, motor, and autonomic nerve systems associated with diabetes mellitus. As part of the class of oral anti-diabetic drugs known as alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, Voglibose is employed explicitly for diabetes mellitus type 2. Its mechanism of action involves the prevention of the digestion of complex carbohydrates, like starch, within the gastrointestinal tract. Normally, complex carbohydrates undergo conversion into simple sugars (monosaccharides), which are then absorbed through the intestine. By inhibiting the activity of alpha-glucosidase, Voglibose mitigates the impact of complex carbohydrates on blood sugar levels, contributing to glycemic control in individuals with diabetes mellitus type 2.
