Dosage Forms Available

• Terbutaline can be taken orally (tablets), inhaled (inhalation solution), and administered subcutaneously, intramuscularly or intravenously (injection).

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Terbutaline can be used by adults and children above 12 years of age.

Contraindications

• Individuals who are allergic to Terbutaline or any of its components should not take this medication. Terbutaline is also contraindicated for use as a tocolytic agent to prevent preterm labour.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Terbutaline may interact with other bronchodilators and asthma medications (such as albuterol), beta-blockers (such as metoprolol and propranolol), antidepressants like MAO inhibitors (such as selegiline) and tricyclics (like imipramine), and diuretics (like furosemide).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Taking more than the prescribed dose of Terbutaline can lead to serious side effects like irregular heartbeat, chest pain, seizures, and severe allergic reactions. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention.

• If you forget to take a dose of Terbutaline, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• For common side effects like headache or dizziness, resting in a dark, quiet room may help.

• If you experience nausea, take the medicine with food or milk.

• Terbutaline may cause dizziness or drowsiness. As such, it is recommended to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• The safety of using Terbutaline during pregnancy and breastfeeding is controversial. Therefore, it should only be used if clearly needed and under the supervision of a doctor.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Individuals with cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, and a history of seizures or peptic ulcers should exercise caution when taking Terbutaline.
