How Fluconazole works
Fluconazole belongs to a class of antifungal medicines called azoles.
Fungal cells rely on a substance called ergosterol to maintain a healthy, stable cell membrane. Fluconazole blocks an enzyme that fungi need to produce ergosterol.
Without enough ergosterol, the fungal cell membrane becomes weak and unstable, which stops the fungus from growing and eventually kills it. This helps clear the infection and relieve associated symptoms.
