Domperidone + Rabeprazole

Antiemetic/Antacid

Uses of Domperidone + Rabeprazole

Domperidone + Rabeprazole is a combination medicine used to treat acidity, heartburn, acid reflux, and related digestive symptoms.

This combination is commonly used for:

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD): Provides short-term relief from heartburn, acid regurgitation, and chest discomfort caused by stomach acid flowing back into the oesophagus.
Acid-related upper gastrointestinal disorders: Helps reduce stomach acid production and relieve associated symptoms.
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: Manages excessive stomach acid production caused by this rare condition.
Nausea and vomiting: Relieves nausea and vomiting associated with acid-related digestive conditions by improving stomach emptying.
Acidity and indigestion: Eases general symptoms of excess stomach acid, including bloating and upper abdominal discomfort.

How Domperidone + Rabeprazole works

  • Domperidone + Rabeprazole works through two complementary mechanisms - one that improves stomach emptying and reduces nausea, and another that reduces stomach acid production.
  • Domperidone works by blocking dopamine receptors in the stomach and intestines and in an area of the brain involved in the control of nausea and vomiting. By blocking dopamine's effects in the gut, Domperidone helps improve the movement of food through the stomach. Because it does not easily cross the blood-brain barrier, it carries a low risk of movement-related side effects in adults, though it can raise levels of a hormone called prolactin.
  • Rabeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by blocking an enzyme called H+/K+ ATPase (the proton pump) found in the cells lining the stomach. This enzyme is responsible for the final step in producing stomach acid. By blocking it, Rabeprazole significantly reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces, helping relieve symptoms caused by excess acid and supporting healing of the stomach lining.
  • Together, these two medicines reduce acid production while also improving stomach emptying and easing nausea.

Disease/Condition Glossary

  • Acidity: The stomach is naturally lined with a protective mucous layer that shields it from its own acid. However, when this layer is damaged or when excessive acid is produced, it can lead to several complications such as Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, gastric ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. GERD happens when stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the oesophagus, causing irritation and symptoms like heartburn, a sour or bitter taste, and trouble swallowing. Gastric ulcers are painful sores on the stomach or intestinal lining, presenting symptoms such as nausea, indigestion, appetite changes, blood in stool, and weight loss. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome involves tumour growth in the upper small intestine, leading to high acid levels and symptoms like bloating, nausea, vomiting, and appetite loss.
