- Rabeprazole is classified as an antisecretory agent, specifically a substituted benzimidazole proton-pump inhibitor, devoid of anticholinergic or histamine H2-receptor antagonist attributes. It suppresses gastric acid release by inhibiting the gastric H+ and K+ ATPase located at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cell. Given that this enzyme functions as the acid (proton) pump within the parietal cell, rabeprazole is designated as a gastric proton pump inhibitor. Its mechanism involves blocking the ultimate stage of gastric acid secretion.
