- Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills bacteria by binding to proteins in the bacterial cell wall called penicillin-binding proteins, disrupting the formation of peptidoglycan, the structural material that gives the cell wall its strength. Without an intact cell wall, the bacteria die.
- Ornidazole is a 5-nitroimidazole antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent. Once it enters bacterial or protozoal cells, it is converted into reactive radical compounds that damage the cell's DNA, proteins, and membranes, causing cell death. It is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa such as Entamoeba and Giardia, which Cefixime alone cannot cover.
- Together, the two medicines provide effective treatment against mixed infections involving both aerobic bacteria and anaerobic or protozoal organisms.
