  • Levofloxacin + Ornidazole is used for the management of mixed bacterial and protozoal infections. This combination belongs to the group of fluoroquinolone antibiotics and nitroimidazole antimicrobial medicines.
  • It is also indicated for gastrointestinal infections, diarrhoea, dysentery, intra-abdominal infections, gynaecological infections, urinary tract infections, and infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.

  • Levofloxacin + Ornidazole is an antimicrobial medicine.

  • Ornidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial medicine. It works by damaging the DNA of susceptible anaerobic microorganisms and protozoa, leading to their death.

Contraindications

  • This combination is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Levofloxacin, Ornidazole, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, nitroimidazole medicines, or any of the excipients. It is also contraindicated in patients with a history of myasthenia gravis, epilepsy, tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use, severe liver disease, and certain heart rhythm disorders associated with QT prolongation.

Other Medications To Avoid With This Medicine

  • This combination may interact with antacids containing aluminium or magnesium, iron supplements, corticosteroids (prednisolone), anticoagulants (warfarin), QT-prolonging medicines (such as amiodarone and erythromycin), antidiabetic medicines, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which may increase the risk of nervous system-related side effects such as seizures. These medicines may increase the risk of tendon injury, irregular heartbeat, nervous system-related side effects, bleeding, or reduced effectiveness of this combination.

Overdose And Missed Dose

  • Overdose of this combination may cause confusion, seizures, severe dizziness, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, and nervous system-related side effects. Immediate medical attention may be required if these symptoms occur.
  • If you forget to take this combination, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose.

Management Of Side Effects

  • Most side effects are temporary, mild, and usually resolve after discontinuation of the medicine. However, if you experience severe diarrhoea, tendon pain, allergic reactions, or worsening of any symptoms, consult your doctor. Taking this combination after meals and maintaining adequate hydration may help reduce stomach discomfort.

  • This combination may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or reduced alertness in some individuals. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience these symptoms.

Use In Pregnancy And Lactation

  • Maintain proper hand hygiene and consume safe, hygienically prepared food and water to help prevent gastrointestinal infections.
