Silymarin is a plant-derived antioxidant and liver-protective compound extracted from milk thistle (Silybum marianum), used to support liver health as supportive therapy in certain liver conditions.
Silymarin is commonly used for:
• Fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis): May help reduce oxidative stress associated with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
• Hepatitis: May be used as supportive therapy in certain types of hepatitis.
• Liver cirrhosis: Used as a supportive treatment to protect remaining liver cells from further damage.
• Alcohol-related liver damage: Helps protect liver cells damaged by chronic alcohol consumption.
• Toxin-induced liver damage: Used as an antidote to support in poisoning caused by certain liver-toxic substances, including Amanita mushroom toxins.
• Liver cell regeneration: May support the liver's natural repair processes following injury.
Silymarin works by protecting liver cells from damage and supporting their natural repair processes through several mechanisms.
As a hepatoprotectant (liver-protective agent), Silymarin:
• Acts as an antioxidant: It neutralises free radicals and reactive oxygen species that cause oxidative damage to liver cells. It also helps maintain the level of glutathione one of the body's most important antioxidant molecules inside the liver, maintaining its protective capacity.
• Stabilises cell membranes: Silymarin binds to the outer membrane of liver cells, strengthening it and blocking the entry of certain liver-toxic substances (such as alcohol metabolites, toxins, and drugs) into the cell.
• Supports protein synthesis and cell regeneration: It promotes the production of messenger RNA (mRNA) in the nucleus of liver cells, which stimulates the synthesis of structural proteins needed to repair and regenerate damaged liver tissue.
• Reduces inflammation and fibrosis: Silymarin inhibits the activity of certain enzymes and inflammatory pathways that contribute to liver fibrosis (scarring), which may help limit further liver damage.

It is mainly given for its liver protective effect. However, some studies have shown its benefit in heart conditions, but it has not been approved for the same.
Silymarin is used to protect liver cells, support liver function, and treat liver disorders like hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce liver inflammation and promote regeneration of liver cells.
