Polmacoxib

Uses of Polmacoxib

Polmacoxib is a selective COX-2 inhibitor (a type of NSAID) used to relieve pain and inflammation, particularly in joint and musculoskeletal conditions.

Polmacoxib is commonly used for:

• Osteoarthritis: Relieves pain, stiffness, and swelling in the hip and knee joints caused by the gradual breakdown of cartilage.
• Ankylosing spondylitis: Manages chronic inflammation and pain in the spine and sacroiliac joints associated with this inflammatory arthritis.
• Acute pain: Provides short-term relief from moderate pain such as dental pain, pain following minor surgery, or injury-related pain.
• Dysmenorrhoea (menstrual pain): Reduces cramping and lower abdominal pain associated with menstruation.
• Rheumatoid arthritis: Relieves pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Side effects of Polmacoxib

  • Abdominal pain

  • Diarrhoea

  • Nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Headache

How Polmacoxib works

  • Polmacoxib works by selectively blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is responsible for producing prostaglandins the chemicals that cause pain, inflammation, and fever.
  • There are two main forms of the COX enzyme in the body: COX-1 and COX-2. COX-1 is present throughout the body and plays a protective role in the stomach lining and platelets. COX-2 is produced mainly at sites of inflammation in response to injury or disease.
  • Unlike older NSAIDs that block both COX-1 and COX-2, Polmacoxib selectively targets COX-2. By inhibiting only COX-2, Polmacoxib reduces the production of inflammatory prostaglandins at the site of pain and inflammation, providing effective anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) effects.
  • Selective COX-2 inhibition spares the COX-1 pathway, which means Polmacoxib is associated with a lower risk of stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding compared to non-selective NSAIDs. This may make it a suitable option for patients who need pain relief but are at risk of gastrointestinal complications.
