Gatifloxacin + Prednisolone

Uses of Gatifloxacin + Prednisolone

Gatifloxacin + Prednisolone is an eye medicine used to treat steroid-responsive inflammatory eye conditions associated with bacterial infection or a risk of bacterial infection.

This combination is commonly used for:

• Bacterial conjunctivitis: Treats redness, discharge, and irritation caused by bacterial infection of the eye.
• Keratitis: Manages bacterial infection of the cornea, the clear front part of the eye.
• Corneal ulcers: Helps treat open sores on the cornea caused by bacterial infection.
• Post-operative eye inflammation: Reduces inflammation following eye surgery where infection risk is present.
• Other inflammatory eye conditions with infection risk: Treats inflammation of the eye when a bacterial infection is also suspected or confirmed.

Side effects of Gatifloxacin + Prednisolone

  • Temporary blurred vision

  • Eye irritation or discomfort

  • Eyelid swelling

  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth

  • Headache

How Gatifloxacin + Prednisolone works

Gatifloxacin + Prednisolone works through two separate mechanisms to treat bacterial infection and reduce eye inflammation.

Gatifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It blocks bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which bacteria need to copy their DNA. This stops susceptible bacteria multiplying.

Prednisolone is a corticosteroid. It reduces the production of inflammatory substances, decreasing redness, swelling, and discomfort in the eye.

Together, Gatifloxacin treats the underlying infection while Prednisolone eases the inflammation it causes.

  • If you miss a dose of Gatifloxacin + Prednisolone, instil it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not instil a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

  • Wear sunglasses when going outdoors to protect your eyes from dust and other foreign particles.

  • Regular eye check-ups are recommended to monitor your eye health and the effect of the medication.
