Faropenem

Antibiotic

Uses of Faropenem

  1. Faropenem is a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections affecting different parts of the body.
  2. Faropenem is commonly used for:

Respiratory tract infections: Treats bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis affecting the lungs and airways.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Manages bacterial infections of the bladder and urinary tract, relieving symptoms such as pain and burning during urination.
Skin and soft tissue infections: Treats bacterial infections of the skin and underlying tissue, including infected wounds and cellulitis.
Gynaecological infections: Manages bacterial infections affecting the female reproductive tract.

  3.  Faropenem is generally prescribed for short-term treatment of bacterial infections and should be completed for the full course as advised by your doctor.

Side effects of Faropenem

  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Rashes

How Faropenem works

  • Faropenem works by preventing bacteria from building a stable cell wall, which is essential for bacterial survival and growth.
  • It belongs to the beta-lactam class of antibiotics, specifically a penem-type antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity against many bacterial species.
  • Faropenem binds to specific proteins called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. These proteins are responsible for the final assembly step of peptidoglycan, the key structural component of the bacterial cell wall.
  • By binding to and inhibiting PBPs, Faropenem disrupts peptidoglycan assembly, resulting in a weakened and structurally unstable cell wall. Without an intact cell wall, bacteria are unable to withstand internal pressure, leading to cell wall rupture and bacterial death (a process known as cell lysis).
  • This mechanism allows Faropenem to effectively treat a broad range of bacterial infections by directly targeting and eliminating the bacteria responsible for the infection.

Disease/Condition Glossary

  • Bacterial invasion can cause skin, lung, digestive tract, or blood infections.  Depending on the site of infection, they may be asymptomatic or exhibit fever, swelling, redness, fatigue and pain. Some common causes are a lack of hygiene, infected food or water, injuries, or coming in contact with infected people. In most cases, antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections, and their choice is based on the specific type of bacteria and the severity of the infection. Finish the full course of antibiotics, even if you feel better, to avoid antibiotic resistance and infection recurrence.
