Dapagliflozin

Antidiabetic

Uses of Dapagliflozin

Dapagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor used to lower blood sugar levels and support heart and kidney health.

It is commonly used for:

  • Type 2 diabetes: Helps lower high blood sugar levels by increasing the amount of glucose removed through urine.
  • Heart failure: Reduces the risk of hospitalisation and worsening symptoms in people with heart failure.
  • Chronic kidney disease: Helps slow the progression of kidney disease and reduce related complications, as prescribed by your doctor.

Side effects of Dapagliflozin

  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore throat
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Flu (fever, tiredness, body aches)
  • Constipation
  • Joint pain
  • Rash

How Dapagliflozin works

  • Dapagliflozin belongs to a class of medicines called SGLT2 inhibitors.
  • The kidneys normally filter glucose from the blood and then reabsorb most of it back into the bloodstream through a protein called SGLT2. Dapagliflozin blocks this protein, so less glucose is reabsorbed and more is removed from the body through urine.
  • This lowers blood sugar levels without depending on insulin. Dapagliflozin also reduces the amount of sodium reabsorbed by the kidneys, which can ease the workload on the heart and offer additional benefits for people with heart failure or chronic kidney disease.
