Cefoperazone + Tazobactam

Uses of Cefoperazone + Tazobactam

Cefoperazone + Tazobactam is a combination antibiotic used to treat moderate to severe bacterial infections, including those caused by bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes.

This combination is commonly used for:

• Intra-abdominal infections: Treats infections within the abdominal cavity, including peritonitis and infections following abdominal surgery.
• Respiratory tract infections: Manages lower respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia caused by susceptible bacteria.
• Skin and soft tissue infections: Treats bacterial infections affecting the skin and the tissue beneath it.
• Urinary tract infections: Manages infections of the bladder, urethra, and kidneys caused by bacteria.
• Septicaemia: Treats bloodstream infections caused by bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes.
• Bacterial meningitis: Manages infections of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord in specific clinical situations.

How Cefoperazone + Tazobactam works

Cefoperazone + Tazobactam works through two complementary actions that together tackle a broader range of bacteria than either medicine alone.

Cefoperazone is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It attaches to and blocks penicillin-binding proteins, which bacteria need to build their cell walls. Without a functional cell wall, the bacterial cell weakens and breaks apart.

Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Some bacteria produce an enzyme called beta-lactamase that can break down antibiotics such as cefoperazone before they act. Tazobactam blocks this enzyme, protecting cefoperazone from being destroyed and allowing it to continue killing the bacteria.

Together, this combination is effective even against bacteria that would otherwise resist cefoperazone alone.
