Cefoperazone + Sulbactam

Cefoperazone + Sulbactam is a combination antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Cefoperazone + Sulbactam is commonly used for:

• Respiratory tract infections: Treats severe bacterial pneumonia, including hospital-acquired pneumonia and ventilator-associated pneumonia (HAP/VAP).
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Treats complicated UTIs caused by susceptible bacteria.
• Skin and soft tissue infections: Treats deep skin infections, infected wounds, and cellulitis caused by susceptible bacteria.
• Intra-abdominal infections: Used for peritonitis and other serious infections of the abdominal cavity.
• Bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis and septic arthritis): Treats bacterial infections affecting the bones and joints.
• Septicaemia (blood poisoning): Used in serious bloodstream infections requiring intravenous treatment.
• Bacterial meningitis: May be used in certain cases as part of the treatment of bacterial infections affecting the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
• Gynaecological infections: Treats pelvic inflammatory disease and post-surgical pelvic infections.

• Cefoperazone + Sulbactam works through two complementary mechanisms to kill bacteria and overcome certain mechanisms of antibiotic resistance.
• Cefoperazone is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by blocking the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Bacteria need a strong, intact cell wall to survive. Cefoperazone inhibits enzymes called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are responsible for building and maintaining the cell wall. Without a functional cell wall, bacteria swell, rupture, and die.
• Sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Some bacteria protect themselves from antibiotics by producing enzymes called beta-lactamases, which break down and destroy antibiotics like Cefoperazone before they can work. Sulbactam binds to and inactivates these beta-lactamase enzymes, preventing them from destroying Cefoperazone. This restores the antibiotic's ability to kill susceptible bacteria that produce certain beta-lactamases.
• Together, Cefoperazone eliminates susceptible bacteria, while Sulbactam extends coverage to bacteria that would otherwise be resistant due to beta-lactamase production. This combination provides broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including some bacteria associated with hospital-acquired infections.
