Dosage Forms Available

• Thyroxine Sodium is primarily available as an oral tablet. Some products may also be available as capsules or oral liquid formulations. The intravenous formulation is used in hospitals for certain severe conditions.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• This medicine may be prescribed to adults, children, and newborns. Its dose is not determined solely on the basis of body weight. The doctor determines the dose based on factors such as age, weight, heart condition, pregnancy, other medical conditions, concomitant medicines, and thyroid test results. Do not change the dose on your own.

Contraindications

• Patients with untreated adrenal insufficiency should not take this medicine. Do not use a particular product if you have a serious allergy to any of its ingredients.
• Thyroxine Sodium should not be used to treat obesity or for weight loss. Taking a higher dose than required may cause serious and potentially life-threatening problems.

Other Medications To Avoid With This Medicine

• Calcium- or iron-containing supplements, antacids, sucralfate, and bile acid sequestrants such as colesevelam and cholestyramine may reduce the absorption of Thyroxine Sodium. These should generally be taken at least 4 hours apart from Thyroxine Sodium. Medicines that reduce stomach acid, such as esomeprazole, may also affect its absorption.
• Diabetes medicines, warfarin, digitalis, oestrogen-containing contraceptives, and antidepressants such as amitriptyline or maprotiline may require monitoring or dose adjustments when used with Thyroxine Sodium. Do not stop these medicines on your own, and inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you are taking.
• Biotin-containing supplements may cause inaccurate thyroid test results. Consult your doctor about whether you should stop taking them before thyroid testing.

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of this medicine may cause a rapid or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, muscle cramps, headache, nervousness, irritability, difficulty sleeping, tremors, muscle weakness, excessive sweating, increased appetite, weight loss, diarrhoea, and heat intolerance. In severe cases, confusion, seizures, loss of consciousness, or other life-threatening problems may occur. Symptoms may appear several days after an overdose. Contact your doctor or emergency medical services immediately if you take more than the prescribed dose.
• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.

Management Of Side Effects

• Most symptoms associated with this medicine may occur when the dose is higher than required. Do not stop the medicine or change the dose on your own. Your doctor may perform thyroid tests and adjust the dose as needed.
• Seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest pain, a very rapid or irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, loss of consciousness, or seizures.

Use In Driving And Operating Machinery

• Thyroxine Sodium is not generally expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness, weakness, a rapid heartbeat, or any other symptom that affects your concentration after taking the medicine, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you feel well again.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Thyroxine Sodium can be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It should not be discontinued during pregnancy because untreated hypothyroidism may harm both the mother and the baby.
• Inform your doctor as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. The dose may need to be increased during pregnancy, and thyroid function may need to be monitored more frequently. Continue taking the prescribed dose during breastfeeding as advised by your doctor.

Caution In Other Conditions

• Patients with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, adrenal insufficiency, pituitary gland disorders, weakened bones, or irregular heartbeat should take this medicine with caution. In older patients, treatment may be started at a lower dose.
• Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease. These conditions and the medicines used to treat them may require closer monitoring of thyroid function and dose adjustments.

Special Dietary & Lifestyle Recommendation

• Take calcium- and iron-containing supplements and certain antacids at least 4 hours apart from this medicine.
• Coffee, soy, high-fibre foods, and walnuts may affect its absorption. It is not necessary to completely avoid these foods, but maintain consistency in the timing of the medicine and meals. Inform your doctor if you make a major change to your diet.
• Follow a balanced diet. Do not take iodine- or seaweed-containing supplements without medical advice, as excessive iodine may worsen thyroid problems. Having hypothyroidism does not mean that every person will have a calcium or vitamin D deficiency or require increased protein intake. There is no need to completely avoid vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, kale, and spinach in normal amounts. Regular physical activity is beneficial for overall health but is not a substitute for this medicine.
