Tegaserod

Uses of Tegaserod

Tegaserod is a gut-motility medicine used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in selected women younger than 65 years who have a low risk of cardiovascular disease.

Tegaserod is commonly used for:

• Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C): Relieves constipation, bloating, and abdominal discomfort associated with this condition.
• Chronic idiopathic constipation: Manages long-term constipation of unknown cause in women below 55 years of age.

Tegaserod is prescribed with caution and is generally avoided in people with a history of heart disease or stroke.

Side effects of Tegaserod

  • Diarrhoea

  • Headache

  • Abdominal pain

  • Nausea

  • Flatulence

  • Dizziness

How Tegaserod works

Tegaserod acts on serotonin receptors, specifically the 5-HT4 receptors, found in the gastrointestinal tract.

By stimulating these receptors, Tegaserod enhances the natural muscle movements of the bowel, helping stool pass through the intestines more easily. This improves bowel motility and relieves symptoms such as constipation and bloating.

Tegaserod also reduces the sensitivity of nerves in the gut that transmit pain signals, which helps ease the abdominal pain and discomfort often experienced with IBS-C.
