Dosage Forms Available

• Tegaserod can be taken orally (tablets).

Age and Dose Restrictions

• This medicine is predominantly meant for adult women under the age of 65 years.

Contraindications

• This medicine is contraindicated in patients with a history of ischemic colitis, stroke, heart attack, or transient ischemic attacks.

• It is also contraindicated in patients with moderate or severe renal impairment or end-stage renal disease.

• Additionally, it should not be used by those with moderate or severe liver impairment.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Tegaserod may interact with CYP3A4 inhibitors (such as ketoconazole and clarithromycin), CYP3A4 inducers (like rifampin and carbamazepine), certain cardiac medications (like digoxin) and oral contraceptives.

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Taking more than the prescribed dose of Tegaserod may cause diarrhoea, abdominal pain, headache, and dizziness. If you suspect an overdose, inform your doctor promptly.

• If you miss a dose of Tegaserod, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one you missed.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• In case of diarrhoea, ensure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

• If you experience a headache or dizziness, rest and avoid sudden movements.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Tegaserod may cause dizziness. Therefore, it is advised to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• It is not known whether Tegaserod is safe for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Therefore, it is advisable to consult your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with a history of cardiovascular issues or bowel obstruction, kidney or liver disease should exercise caution when using Tegaserod.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• Incorporating a diet high in fibre can help manage the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

• Regular light exercises like walking or yoga may be beneficial.

• It's also advisable to maintain a regular eating schedule and avoid skipping meals to help regulate bowel function.
