• Sodium Bicarbonate is available for use via the oral route (tablet and powder), intravenous route (injection) or external route (ear drops).

Age and Dose Restrictions

• It is meant for adults and children above 18 years of age.

Contraindications

• Overdose of Sodium Bicarbonate may cause symptoms like shortness of breath, muscle weakness, uncontrolled shaking of the body and prolonged unconsciousness. If you observe these symptoms, inform your doctor and follow the advice accordingly.

Other Medications To Avoid With This Medicine

• Inform your doctor of your current prescription and nonprescription medication regimen, particularly highlighting the use of other antacids, aspirin or aspirin-like medications, benzodiazepines, flecainide, iron supplements, ketoconazole, lithium, methenamine, methotrexate, quinidine, sulfa-containing antibiotics, tetracycline, or vitamins. It is recommended to administer sodium bicarbonate at least 2 hours apart from other medications to optimise therapeutic efficacy and minimise potential drug interactions.

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Overdose of Sodium Bicarbonate may cause symptoms like shortness of breath, muscle weakness, uncontrolled shaking of the body and prolonged unconsciousness. If you observe these symptoms, inform your doctor and follow the advice accordingly.
• If you forget a Sodium Bicarbonate dose, take it as soon as you remember. But avoid repeating the dose.

Use In Driving And Operating Machinery

• Sodium Bicarbonate will not affect your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. 

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Sodium Bicarbonate is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Caution In Other Conditions

• Individuals with gastroesophageal reflux disease should contemplate lifestyle adjustments, incorporating dietary modifications such as adopting a diet marked with an emphasis on low-acid foods and avoiding spicy and fatty meals. Concurrently, a reduction of portion sizes is advised, complemented by the administration of Sodium Bicarbonate for comprehensive management of acidosis.

Special Dietary & Lifestyle Recommendation

• Avoid alcohol when you are taking Sodium Bicarbonate.
• It is best to take Sodium Bicarbonate 1-2 hours after meals.
