Dosage Forms Available

• Loratadine is available in several formulations for oral administration. These include regular tablets, orally disintegrating tablets (do not require water to dissolve), liquid syrup, and chewable tablets.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Loratadine is intended for use in adults and children aged 6 years and older. For individuals under the age of 2 years, this medicine should only be given under the supervision of a doctor.

Contraindications

• Loratadine is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to this medicine or any of its inactive ingredients.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Loratadine may interact with other antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), cough and cold medicines (e.g., acetaminophen, cetrizine), and other central nervous system depressants (e.g., diazepam, clonazepam).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Loratadine, though, unlikely due to its large margin of safety, may cause symptoms such as drowsiness or sleepiness. In children, agitation and increased heart rate have been observed.
• If a dose of Loratadine is missed, it should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is near the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects of Loratadine are temporary, generally harmless, and resolve when the medication is discontinued. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Drinking plenty of fluids can help manage dry mouth.
• Resting or getting a good night's sleep can reduce feelings of fatigue or drowsiness.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Loratadine may have a minimal effect on the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience drowsiness, avoid these activities.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• The safety of Loratadine during pregnancy is not yet fully established. It is advised to consult a doctor when considering this medication during pregnancy and lactation.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with liver or kidney impairment should use Loratadine with caution, as they may require a lower dose.
• Also, certain formulations of the medicine may contain sugar and/or aspartame, which could pose a risk to patients with diabetes and phenylketonuria.
