Levosulpiride

Antacid

Uses of Levosulpiride

Levosulpiride is used to manage gastrointestinal conditions such as heartburn, bloating, nausea, and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is also prescribed for certain psychiatric conditions including depression.

Levosulpiride is commonly used for:

  • Functional dyspepsia: Relieves symptoms such as upper abdominal discomfort, bloating, nausea, and the feeling of fullness after eating.
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD): Helps reduce symptoms of acid reflux including heartburn and regurgitation by improving the movement of food through the digestive tract.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): Eases bowel-related discomfort, bloating, and irregular bowel habits.
  • Nausea and vomiting: Controls nausea and vomiting linked to digestive disorders or other causes.
  • Depression: At higher doses, Levosulpiride may be prescribed for mild-to-moderate depression, particularly when digestive symptoms are also present.
  • Schizophrenia: Used in the management of certain psychotic symptoms under specialist supervision.

Side effects of Levosulpiride

  • Vertigo
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Sleepiness

How Levosulpiride works

  • Levosulpiride works through two key actions in the body: improving the movement of food through the digestive system and regulating chemical signals in the brain.
  • In the digestive tract, Levosulpiride blocks dopamine D2 receptors found in the stomach and intestines. Dopamine normally slows down gut movement. By blocking these receptors, Levosulpiride speeds up the movement of food through the stomach and intestines, which relieves bloating, nausea, fullness, and heartburn. This type of action makes it a prokinetic agent.
  • In the brain, Levosulpiride also blocks dopamine receptors and may also affect other neurotransmitter systems involved in mood regulation. This action helps regulate mood and manage symptoms of depression or psychotic disorders.
  • Together, these mechanisms allow Levosulpiride to address both digestive discomfort and mood-related symptoms, depending on the dose and condition being treated.
