Framycetin

Antibiotic

Uses of Framycetin

Framycetin is a topical antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, eyes, and ears.

Framycetin is commonly used for:

  • Infected skin wounds: Treats bacterial infections in cuts, abrasions, minor burns, and ulcers to prevent the spread of infection and support healing.
  • Burns and skin ulcers: Applied to infected or at-risk burn wounds and chronic skin ulcers to reduce bacterial load and promote recovery.
  • Otitis externa (outer ear infection): Applied as ear drops to treat bacterial infections of the ear canal, causing pain, discharge, and itching.
  • Conjunctivitis and superficial eye infections: Used as eye drops to treat bacterial infections of the eyelids and the surface of the eye, including conjunctivitis.
  • Post-surgical wound care: Applied to surgical incision sites to reduce the risk of bacterial infection during healing.
  • Prevention of bacterial infection in minor skin injuries: Used on minor cuts and grazes in patients at risk of infection.

Side effects of Framycetin

The side effects of Framycetin are:

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Local allergic reaction

How Framycetin works

  • Framycetin works by killing bacteria that cause infections of the skin, eyes, and ears.
  • It belongs to a class of antibiotics called aminoglycosides. Framycetin targets the ribosomes inside bacterial cells — the structures responsible for producing proteins that the bacteria need to survive and multiply.
  • Specifically, Framycetin binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria. This binding disrupts the process of reading genetic instructions (translation), causing the bacteria to produce faulty, non-functional proteins. Without the correct proteins, bacteria cannot carry out essential functions, which leads to their death.
  • Framycetin is bactericidal, meaning it kills bacteria rather than just stopping their growth. It is effective against a broad range of gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positive bacteria commonly responsible for skin, ear, and eye infections.
  • Because it is applied topically, Framycetin works directly at the site of infection, minimising the risk of systemic side effects.
