How Flupirtine works
- Flupirtine works as a centrally acting, non-opioid analgesic through a unique mechanism that distinguishes it from other pain medicines such as NSAIDs or opioids.
- It selectively activates neuronal potassium channels (specifically KCNQ/Kv7 potassium channels) on the surface of nerve cells in the central and peripheral nervous system. When these potassium channels open, potassium ions flow out of the nerve cell, making the cell less electrically excitable. This reduces the ability of pain-transmitting nerve cells (neurons) to fire repetitively, dampening overactive pain signals.
- This mechanism also contributes to muscle-relaxant properties: by reducing excessive nerve signalling in motor pathways, Flupirtine decreases abnormal muscle tension and spasm that often accompanies musculoskeletal pain.
- Additionally, Flupirtine has indirect antagonism at NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors, which may contribute to its analgesic effects. This means it does not act through opioid receptors.
