Uses of Ferrous Ascorbate + Folic Acid

  • Ferrous Ascorbate + Folic Acid is commonly used to treat iron deficiency and anaemia, including conditions like menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding) and folate deficiency anaemia. Iron helps boost red blood cell production, while folic acid supports overall blood health. Folic acid is also important during pregnancy, as it helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. Additionally, this combination is beneficial for people with poor diets, digestive issues, or conditions that affect iron absorption, helping improve energy levels and overall health by preventing or treating iron and folate deficiencies.

Side effects of Ferrous Ascorbate + Folic Acid

  • Nausea
  • Dark-Coloured Stool
  • Constipation
  • Vomiting

How Ferrous Ascorbate + Folic Acid works

  • Upon administration, Ferrous Ascorbate undergoes conversion to the ferric form, which promptly transforms into the ferrous form upon reaching the stomach. This ferrous form is efficiently absorbed in the duodenum. One notable advantage of Ferrous Ascorbate is its provision of both ferrous ions and ascorbate within a single compound. Its stable chelate of iron with ascorbate prevents dissociation upon entering the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Folic Acid is initially biologically inert but undergoes conversion to tetrahydrofolic acid and methyl tetrahydrofolate because of dihydrofolate reductase in the liver. These derivative forms of folic acid are then transported across cells via receptor-mediated endocytosis to fulfil various essential bodily functions.

Age and Dose Restrictions

  • This combination is meant for adults and children above 18 years of age.

Contraindications

  • This medicine should be avoided in individuals with allergy to iron, particularly those with bacterial infections. Furthermore, it is contraindicated in patients diagnosed with hemosiderosis, hemochromatosis, and hemolytic anaemia.

Other Medications to Avoid

  • Magnesium trisilicate and antacids containing carbonates impede the absorption of iron. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid taking oral iron products simultaneously with oral tetracycline antibiotics, as they can interfere with each other's absorption. It is recommended to separate the intake of these products by at least two hours.

  • Incorporate more fruits into your diet, particularly those high in iron such as pomegranate and citrus fruits. Stay hydrated by drinking ample fluids throughout the day.

Disease/Condition Glossary

  • Anaemia/ Iron deficiency anaemia: Anaemia or iron deficiency anaemia is a common condition that occurs when the body lacks enough iron to produce adequate haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells (RBC) that carries oxygen throughout the body. When iron levels are low, the blood cannot deliver enough oxygen to tissues and organs, resulting in signs such as fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, and dizziness.

This condition can develop gradually and may result from poor diet, blood loss (such as heavy menstruation), or absorption issues. Left untreated, iron deficiency anaemia can affect growth, mental performance, and immune function. It is diagnosed via blood tests and managed with iron supplements, dietary changes, and treatment of underlying causes. Early diagnosis and proper care can effectively restore normal iron levels.
