Dydrogesterone

Drugs For Female Infertility

Uses of Dydrogesterone

Dydrogesterone is a synthetic progestogen used to treat conditions related to progesterone deficiency and to support pregnancy. It works similarly to the natural hormone progesterone produced by the body.

Dydrogesterone is commonly used for:

  • Irregular or painful periods: Helps regulate abnormal menstrual cycles and reduces cramping or heavy bleeding.
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): Manages mood changes, bloating, and discomfort associated with the menstrual cycle.
  • Endometriosis: Helps reduce the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, relieving pain and related symptoms.
  • Infertility due to low progesterone levels: Supports the menstrual cycle in women with progesterone deficiency who are trying to conceive.
  • Luteal phase support: Supports the second half of the menstrual cycle during fertility treatments or assisted reproduction.
  • Amenorrhoea (absence of periods): Helps restart periods that have stopped before menopause.
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT): Combined with oestrogen to protect the uterine lining in menopausal women undergoing HRT.

Side effects of Dydrogesterone

  • Headache
  • Migraine
  • Nausea
  • Breast pain
  • Tender breasts
  • Dysmenorrhoea
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Heavy menstruation

How Dydrogesterone works

  • Dydrogesterone works by mimicking the action of natural progesterone in the body, particularly on the lining of the uterus (endometrium).
  • After ovulation, progesterone prepares the uterine lining to receive and support a fertilised egg. In women with low progesterone levels, this process may be disrupted, leading to irregular periods or difficulty conceiving.
  • Dydrogesterone binds to progesterone receptors in the uterus and converts the uterine lining from its growing phase (proliferative phase) to its receptive phase (secretory phase). This creates a stable environment for a fertilised egg to implant and develop.
  • It also helps regulate the menstrual cycle by preventing the uterine lining from thickening excessively, which is useful in managing heavy periods and conditions like endometriosis.
  • In hormone replacement therapy, Dydrogesterone is added alongside oestrogen to protect the uterine lining from the effects of unopposed oestrogen, which can otherwise increase the risk of uterine abnormalities.
