Diethylcarbamazine is an antiparasitic medicine. It is used for the treatment of certain filarial infections like infestation by Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, Brugia timori, infestation by Loa loa and infestation with Onchocerca volvulus.
This medication acts by releasing the excretory antigen from microfilariae, killing the free radicals, drug-induced changes in metabolism in the microfilariae and/or host endothelial cells, which is triggered by platelets and results in immobilisation of microfilariae on endothelial surfaces and inhibits microtubule polymerization.
