Cinnarizine

Antihistamine

Uses of Cinnarizine

Cinnarizine is used to relieve dizziness, nausea, and vomiting caused by inner ear disturbances and balance disorders.

Cinnarizine is commonly used for:

  • Motion sickness: Prevents and relieves nausea and vomiting triggered by travel by sea, air, or road.
  • Vertigo: Reduces the sensation of spinning or dizziness caused by inner ear disorders.
  • Ménière's disease: Helps manage symptoms including severe dizziness (vertigo), nausea, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and a feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear.
  • Labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis: Eases dizziness and balance problems caused by inflammation of the inner ear.
  • Balance-related symptoms associated with certain vestibular disorders: Assists in managing dizziness and balance problems.
  • Inner ear circulation disorders: May help reduce symptoms such as dizziness and tinnitus associated with impaired blood flow to the inner ear.

Side effects of Cinnarizine

  • Drowsiness
  • Stomach upset

How Cinnarizine works

  • Cinnarizine works primarily by blocking calcium channels in the smooth muscle cells of blood vessels supplying the inner ear and may help improve blood flow in this area.
  • By improving blood flow to the inner ear, Cinnarizine helps restore normal function to the balance organs, which reduces symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Cinnarizine also has antihistamine properties, meaning it blocks histamine H1 receptors. Histamine is involved in triggering nausea and vomiting, particularly in response to movement or inner ear disturbances. By blocking these receptors, Cinnarizine helps suppress the signals from the inner ear to the brain's vomiting centre, reducing the urge to vomit and the sensation of dizziness.
  • Together, these two actions make Cinnarizine effective for both treating active episodes of vertigo and preventing motion sickness.
