Cefuroxime

Antibiotic

Uses of Cefuroxime

  • Cefuroxime is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It is commonly prescribed for respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia, bronchitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis. Additionally, it is effective against middle ear infections, nasal cavity infections, skin infections, sinus infections, and urinary tract infections.
  • It is also used to treat uncomplicated gonorrhoea, a sexually transmitted infection, and early Lyme disease caused by a bacterial infection transmitted through tick bites. Furthermore, this antibiotic is effective in treating impetigo, a contagious bacterial skin infection. It is also prescribed for bacterial meningitis, a serious infection affecting the membranes of the brain and spinal cord.

How Cefuroxime works

  • Cefuroxime belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall formation, leading to bacterial cell death. Due to its broad-spectrum activity, it is effective against a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, making it a versatile and widely used antibiotic for multiple bacterial infections.
